Tomorrow's Leaders

Every day on the news or newspaper, magazines or on any other media source all we here is the debt crisis, unemployment and all this other teams. What are we supposed to do as the youth, do cry and mourn about it or do something about it? Our current leaders have made mistakes and some of the mistakes are affecting us all. As the youth all we can do is try rectifying those mistakes, but how do we do it. Firstly we can position ourselves in right positions and we do that by starting our own business if we can’t get employment and if we do get employed we work hard to climb the cooperate ladder and once we are on top we inspire those at the bottom (future youth) to the same thing work for themselves or work for someone else never the less hard should always be present.

The youth should not depend on the government for support we should be initiative to support ourselves. Southern Sun or Sure T ravel they did not start by being the best in the business they worked themselves there and it is our time to the same. Get up and make a difference IT'S ABOUT TIME TO STOP COMPLAINING AND DO SOMETHING. And that is how we rectify our current leader’s mistakes by getting up and making a difference.

PERSEVERANCE IS KEY

One thing that is difficult for us the youth swallow is the fact that this industry of ours is difficult to penetrate and to be earn large salary over night. You have to work for years and make a name for yourself, before you can earn a large salary. Perseverance is very important especially in tourism because if you do not persevere you will not be happy to you it will be just a job to pay the bills. In this generation we can no longer afford to work for the sake of working, we have to enjoy what we do because we have so many opportunities waiting for us to utilise them.

The salary scale for entry level in this industry R2000 to R7000, if you’re lucky you can earn more than that. If you want R15000 to R20000 as a start this may not be the right industry for you. Even when you start your own business it will probably take at least five years before you start making profit. Although exciting and challenging perseverance is the key ingredient in order for you to survive in this industry.

BED AND BREAK FAST

What is the meaning of bed and breakfast? You hear this term everywhere in the Hospitality industry, but what is bed and breakfast. If I was not in the industry I would say breakfast in bed, but is it breakfast in bed. First you have to get up and open the door (now you out of the bed). Second brash your teeth and wash the face. It no longer qualifies to be breakfast in bed. Room service says that I will bring you breakfast in bed, but again you have to open the door and be out of bed.

The known definition of Bed and breakfast may refer to the fact that you get to sleep and eat in the morning. So when they refer to it as bed and breakfast it simply means you can eat breakfast there maybe in bed or out of bed the choice is yours.
There was this other lady who made an example during the tourism stakeholder engagement meeting that when she on a holiday requested breakfast in bed, but she was irritated because she had to get up and open the door which to her it was no longer breakfast in bed, but breakfast in the room cause she was out of the bed”
Interesting maybe bed and breakfast should be something like breakfast in bed where by the attended just use the extra key to open the door to get in without knocking. IS IT A BE DISASTER OR SERVICE EXCELLNCE. Share how you would like your breakfast in bed.

ARE YOU EMPLOYABLE

Most of the hospitality and tourism graduates complain about the industry not offering them the opportunities to start their career after skool. Most of the time when you read an advert only 1% do not require experience, but how do you get experience if no one is willing to give the opportunity to get one.
When you sales person promote an innovative product they try by all means to convince the buyer that the product is worth it. As graduate how do you convince the employer that they should choose you above a person who has experience? You need to prepare a sales pitch to sell yourself to the employer and do not wait for hotels to advertise, contact them ask if they a vacant position or not. You will be surprised at how many of them have vacancies but they did not advertise.

Once you have been invited for an interview make sure you get the job. Sell yourself and never let your gut down. “I once went for an interview and i became too comfortable and you can imagine what happened after that, I did not get the job”. Watch your every step. Once you get the job make sure that the employer does not regret hiring you.

To be employable does not take a miracle, all you have to do is to ensure that you believe and trust yourself. Thousands of people are searching for work and is like a race, if you do not run fast enough you will lose.
